Moles on the Move

“MOLES ON THE MOVE”

Most of you know that we have a large three acre field in front of our home that I mow weekly. My father-in-law planted grass there years ago, and now it is a nice addition to our yard. A few years ago one of our neighbors decided to switch part of his yard into a hay field. So, of course they sprayed insecticides on the field to kill the grubs and other things that moles eat to survive. Naturally, the moles moved across the field into another neighbor’s grass along his driveway. Well, guess what! He sprayed his grass as well, and now the moles are in our front three acres. Each day I see a mound of dirt pushed up and then the next day another mound and so on. Now they are headed for my wife’s daylilies along the driveway. One thing I noticed about the moles is that they make their advancement slowly and in small steps. They move toward their goal a little at a time.

The slowly moving moles caused me to think that Satan uses the same tactics in achieving his goals. Satan uses small obstacles or temptations. Nothing really spectacular, just little roadblocks that are not really noticeable. It is kind of like a mole run advancing slowly toward your flowers. For example:  letting a curse word slip once, and then again and again; missing Bible studies on purpose once, and then again and again; skipping worship services once, and again and again. Moving slowly away from God is one of Satan’s best tools. Working slowly and gradually is when he is most successful in destroying us.

As we get used to these little sins, we become immune to their damage to our souls. I Timothy 4:2 reminds us that our consciences can be “seared with a hot iron” so that sin no longer bothers us. We must constantly be on guard against Satan’s devices as we read in 2 Corinthians 2:11. Paul reminds the Ephesians that they must take up “the armor of God” to fight Satan and his cunning ways. Just like those moles destroying my yard slowly and incrementally, Satan works in the same way.

So, when you look at those mounds of dirt from the moles in your yard, be reminded that Satan is working on your soul in the same way. Little by little, step by step. James 4:7 reminds us, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
